Stahlstrasse

Stahlstrasse in downtown Essen is the city's oldest red-light district, with a history stretching back to approximately 1900. Along the street stand 17 houses where sex workers practice their trade. The district is a fixed, if often overlooked, part of Essen's urban history and has endured through numerous societal changes over more than a century.

The layout follows the classic walk-up format. Visitors can stroll along the street and choose a house. Prices are in the budget range, which distinguishes Stahlstrasse from more upscale establishments. Operating hours span the entire day, though most activity takes place during the evening and nighttime hours.

As a historic red-light district, Stahlstrasse has its own distinct character. The houses vary in condition and furnishing, and visitors should arrive with appropriately modest expectations.
