Apfelwein Wagner

Bars & Clubs · Frankfurt

Apfelwein Wagner on Schweizer Strasse has been part of Sachsenhausen since 1931, as integral to the neighborhood as the apple wine itself. The tavern has barely changed over the decades — the wooden benches, checkered tablecloths, and distinctive aroma of freshly tapped apple wine remain. Guests sit at long communal tables, order a Bembel, and pair it with hearty Hessian cuisine: Handkaes mit Musik, Gruene Sosse, schnitzel with potato salad.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and convivial. Locals and tourists sit side by side, and after the second Schoppen, conversation starts flowing naturally. The apple wine is traditionally served in a Bembel and poured into the distinctive ridged glasses called Gerippte — first-timers receive a patient explanation of the customs.

Open daily from 11 AM to midnight. Prices are remarkably affordable by Frankfurt standards, and portions are generous. Anyone visiting Frankfurt who has never been to a classic apple wine tavern should start here. Wagner is no longer a hidden gem, but it remains an institution for good reason.
