Herbertstraße

Herbertstrasse is arguably the most famous street in Hamburg's red-light district and a landmark of St. Pauli. The short alley between Davidstrasse and Gerhardstrasse is screened off at both ends by barriers and is only accessible to men aged 18 and over. Behind the barriers, sex workers present themselves in illuminated shop windows — a concept that Hamburg shares with Amsterdam but that is unique in Germany.

The process is as direct as it gets: visitors walk through the street, look around, and approach the women if interested. Prices and services are negotiated individually. There is no central organization — each woman works independently and rents her own window. The atmosphere is businesslike and candid. Photography is strictly prohibited and is swiftly enforced by those present.

Herbertstrasse is far more than a red-light block — it is a cultural phenomenon and an integral part of Hamburg's urban history. Access is available continuously, with the liveliest hours falling in the evening and night.
