Cave 54

Cave 54 holds the distinction of being one of the oldest student jazz clubs in Germany, with a history stretching back to the 1950s when American GIs and local students shared a common love for jazz in postwar Heidelberg. The venue sits in a vaulted stone cellar beneath Kraemergasse in the old town, and the subterranean setting provides natural acoustics that make every performance feel intimate and immediate. The low ceilings, arched walls, and candlelit tables conjure an atmosphere that has barely changed in decades.

The programming extends beyond pure jazz into blues, soul, funk, and occasional acoustic sets, though jazz remains the backbone. Live performances take place on regular scheduled evenings, and the quality is consistently strong — both touring musicians and talented local acts grace the small stage. On non-concert nights, Cave 54 operates as a relaxed bar where the music comes from the speakers rather than the stage, and the atmosphere is quieter but no less characterful.

Entry fees for live shows vary but typically fall between five and twelve euros, with student discounts often available. Drinks are moderately priced. The cellar space is limited, so arriving before the doors open for popular acts is recommended. Cave 54 is tucked into a side street off the Hauptstrasse and can be easy to miss — look for the staircase leading downward. Cash preferred. Check the programme in advance, as opening times depend on the event schedule.
