Roter Ochsen
Roter Ochsen has been pouring drinks since 1703, making it one of the oldest continuously operating student taverns in Germany. The walls of this Hauptstrasse institution are covered with carved initials, fraternity insignia, and historical photographs documenting over three centuries of university life. Among the notable guests whose visits are commemorated: Otto von Bismarck drank here as a student, and Mark Twain wrote about the place during his European travels. Sitting in the wood-panelled main room feels less like visiting a bar and more like stepping into a living museum of German student culture.
Despite its historical weight, Roter Ochsen remains an active and lively tavern rather than a dusty relic. Live piano music on regular evenings adds to the atmosphere and frequently inspires the room to break into song — German drinking songs, university anthems, and the occasional international favourite all make appearances. The menu offers traditional German food alongside beer and wine at prices that, while not rock-bottom, are fair for the experience. The house wines from the Pfalz and Baden regions are a good choice.
Roter Ochsen sits on the eastern stretch of the Hauptstrasse, beyond the busiest tourist zone but still easily walkable from the Marktplatz. It opens in the early evening and draws a mix of students, tourists, and locals across all ages. Reservations are recommended on weekends and during the summer tourist season. The atmosphere is at its best on piano nights when the room is full and the singing begins. Cash and card accepted.
