Brothels

Cologne · 2 entries

Cologne has one of the most well-known red-light scenes in Germany, historically centered around Hornstraße. The range extends from Europe's largest walk-in brothel to more compact venues on the same street.

Hornstraße

Hornstraße near Ehrenfeld is Cologne's most famous red-light address. Here stands Pascha, which with its ten stories and over 120 apartments is considered Europe's largest Laufhaus. Beyond the apartments, the building houses a nightclub, a strip club, and dining facilities. Directly across the street, Das Bordell offers a more compact, quieter alternative following the same Laufhaus concept.

How Does a Laufhaus Work?

In a German Laufhaus, sex workers independently rent rooms and operate on their own account. Visitors walk through the floors, look around, and knock on an open door if interested. There is no central reception and no intermediary — all arrangements are made directly with the provider.

Legal Framework

  • Sex work has been fully legal in Germany since 2002
  • The Prostitute Protection Act (ProstSchG) of 2017 introduced mandatory registration and operating permits
  • Condom use is mandatory without exception
  • Licensed venues hold an official operating permit

Tips for Visitors

  • Respectful behavior is a baseline expectation
  • Cash is mandatory — there is no central register
  • Prices and services are discussed directly beforehand
  • Discretion is expected from all parties
